The Department of Economics, Madras Christian College is a nationally renowned centre for learning. The department has an enviable legacy of alumni who have distinguished themselves as leading economists, corporate executives, bureaucrats and teachers globally. The first three finance ministers of Independent India were alumni of this department.
The department’s flagship event ‘ARTHA’, a national level economics symposium was an initiative started by the Economics Association of 2005. Since then, it has been conducted for six years consecutively.
Artha 2012 was the seventh edition of the symposium under the theme, “1.21 Billion and counting: The New Generation of India’s Growth”. Artha 2012 was held at Madras Christian College on 19th of January 2012. This year Artha concentrated on competitive programs namely quiz, debate, creative writing, ad-zap, young economist and eco-maze(treasure hunt). The one day long event witnessed participation from more than 10 colleges from in and around Chennai. Participation from different departments of MCC was outstanding. Exciting cash prizes were given to the winners. The overall trophy was won by Madras School of Economics.The event was concluded by cultural programs. Special performance by Aravind Venugopal was well received by the crowd.
