The Department of Mathematics was established in 1871 and has the reputation of having distinguished mathematicians in the past. Areas of specialization include Computer Mathematics, Complex Analysis, Fluid Dynamics, Astronomy, Harmonic Analysis and Mathematics Education for the visually challenged. The Department offers Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes with an appropriate blend of pure and applied Mathematics courses and job oriented courses.

A total lunar eclipse is set to occur on 7 – 8 November 2022. Also termed as the Beaver Blood Moon lunar eclipse, it will be visible from Asia, Australia, Parts of North America, Eastern Europe and most of South America. The totality of the eclipse occurs between 8 November 15 : 46 : 39 IST and 17 : 11 : 36 IST in Chennai during which time the moon will be below the horizon, making it impossible to view directly.
