The Centre for Peace Studies was inaugurated during the 175th year celebration of the Madras Christian College, on the 17th February 2012, by Nancy Chapman, the President of the United Board for Christian Higher Education. The centre is active in multiple facets promoting a culture of peace and equipping those in the academia for continuing to spread the same into the larger society through academic exercise. The centre undertakes research and publications in the cause of promoting peace and peace education nationally, regionally and globally.
The centre collaborates with other agencies interested and involved in the goal of promoting peace. Training of teachers in institutions of higher learning was undertaken by the Centre in conflict-ridden places such as Sri Lanka, Dimapur in Nagaland and in Chennai. Several seminars and workshops on peace education, curriculum development for Peace Studies were conducted at MCC ever since the inauguration of the Centre with many prominent leaders and scholars from all over the world as resource persons.
The Centre for Peace Studies seeks to contribute to peacebuilding efforts in communities locally, nationally and globally by equipping students through academic programs and special training programs to engage effectively and wisely with communities in conflict situations.
The Centre also seeks to engage in research and publication for the promotion of a culture of peace in society.
The Centre for Peace Studies currently offers a one year “Diploma in Peace and Conflict Studies”, through the School of Continuing Education of MCC. The classes for the Diploma program are conducted on those Saturdays when the College does not have other regular classes.
A dedicated team of teachers who are experienced in Peace Education handle the classes along with a few guest teachers from outside MCC. The course includes field exposure/ internship with other NGOs and a research project. The course content is divided into six modules. The eligibility for admission to the Diploma in Peace and Conflict Studies is a pass in the 12th standard or equivalent.
