Office of Extension Programmes

Established in 2024, the Office of the Extension Programmes, plays a pivotal role in fulfilling one of the core values of MCC – ‘Social Relevance’.  Various extension programmes are organised for the benefit of the student community & local community and to support the cause of the government & the local bodies. The expertise and resources of MCC are utilised for realising the sustainable development goals & helping communities become self-reliant. As students actively participate in extension activities, they develop & gain skills (personal & professional), social & civic responsibility and become engaged citizens. 

The office of the extension programmes oversees the following:

  • Part V Extension Activities of the CBCS curriculum

As per the CBCS curriculum, every undergraduate (UG) student must complete the mandatory hours of any one of the Part V extension units to earn one credit. The various Part V units of MCC are (click on the name of the unit to peruse the course structure & video about the unit):

  • Service-Learning Programmes (SLP) of the various departments

Service-learning is a teaching and learning approach which integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enhance learning, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. It goes beyond traditional volunteering by emphasizing learning through direct engagement and reflection on the experience. MCCians serve & learn through the following SLPS

  • Chemistry (Aided)- Science Camp for Tribal School Children
  • English (Aided)- The Magic of Story Telling
  • History-  From Learning to Engagement
  • B.Sc. Computer Science-Empowering Learning through Digital Tools- LMS Implementation 
  • English (SFS)- Bridging the Gap: Enhancing English Language Proficiency through Service Learning Programme 
  • MCA – A Slice of Life (creation of e-commerce platform for the products of Rescued Bonded Labour Association & Gypsies)   
  • Chemistry (SFS)-Scientific Enquiry & Community Engagement: Chemistry in everyday life 
  • Physical Education-Sports for Development 

International Interdisciplinary Service-Learning Programme (IISLP)

In collaboration with the Office of International Programmes, the Office of Extension Programmes offers the International Interdisciplinary Service-Learning Programme, intending to provide a social & cultural immersive experience for international students. As an outcome of the IISLP, an international student will (1) Discuss the varied culture of India and compare & contrast it with their context (2) Apply subject matter knowledge in real-life situations (3) Develop personal, interpersonal, leadership skills and global skills and (4) Demonstrate reflective practice.

The International interdisciplinary service-learning experience can be customised based on the needs of the home institution/university, the discipline of study, time duration of the service-learning experience etc., 

An international student, as part of his/her curriculum, can choose from any of the following:   

  1. Cross-cultural Interdisciplinary Immersive Experience

 An international student from any discipline can be part of this experience. This will include experiencing a new culture, visits to places of cultural and historical importance, explore rural areas of Tamil Nadu, learn folk art, provide services for communities, learn global skills and have some fun with their team.

  1. Interdisciplinary Community-based Service-learning experience 

An international student will be able to relate community-based service experience to their course objectives using structured reflection and learning activities. This experience will provide opportunities for students to use newly acquired academic skills and knowledge in real-life situations in Indian communities.

  1. Internship placements with nonprofits and NGO experience 

An international student can do his/her internship/ practicum/ field exposure/ research in their respective area of interest/ academics. Students are placed in select non-profits or NGOs where they work individually or in teams. They apply their knowledge and skills to complete their required hours of service

  • Interaction with Government offices relating to extension activities

The Office of Extension Programmes works with the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board, Tribal Welfare Directorate of the Govt. of Tamil Nadu, Greater Chennai Police, Cyber Crime Wing, Anti Narcotic, Swachh Bharat Mission, Tambaram Corporation, Tambaram Taluk Tahsildar Office, Council of Leather Exports, Government of India to implement their programmes & projects.
