About Us

The Department of Commerce (SFS) started functioning in 1999. The Department envisions itself to be at the forefront of innovative and creative learning practices. Our vision is to inculcate knowledge, skills, ethical and social values in young minds.

Seven years after its inception, in 2006, the M.Com. (COBA) was introduced along with a second batch of B.Com. (General). With the pressing demand for B.Com. (Accounting & Finance) came into force in the year 2009. B. Com (Professional Accounting) was introduced in 2020 along with the third batch of B. Com (General).

The Department has energetic, determined and passionate faculty always going beyond their duty to stimulate and motivate the students to achieve their dreams. The Department emphasises hands-on learning through projects, internships, seminars and workshops of field-level experts drawn from academia and industry.

The Department has an active Student forum, namely ‘E-Commerce Forum’. The Forum has been proactive since its inception in providing both exposure and opportunity for the students to participate in Co–curricular and Extra Curricular activities. The Forum organises Annual Conferences, Special Lectures, Workshops, Industrial visits, Placement Training, Orientation Programs, etc.

The Department developed into a research department with the commencement of M. Phil degree in 2012 and the Doctoral Program in 2015.

INSIGNIA, an Annual Inter-Collegiate event organised under the E-commerce Forum showcases students’ organisational and leadership skills. 

The placement orientation of the Curriculum of the Department is evident from the fact that a large number of students are placed in well-known companies like Deloitte, Ernst and Young, Royal Bank of Scotland, Accenture, Sutherland, Lemon Peak Pvt Ltd., Kotak Life Insurance, Synergy Maritime Private Ltd., Natwest Group, Ample technologies – Bose, KPMG, BNY MELLON, Guvi – Intern, etc.

The journey that began two decades ago has a long way to go and miles to cover.

Events

National Conference and Insignia

 Conferences are essential for encouraging cooperation, exchanging knowledge, and advancing research across a range of fields. Every year, the Department of Commerce conducts conferences covering diverse themes.

Last year the Conference was conducted on 25th, 26th of September 2023 on the topic “NEW AGE TECHNOLOGY FOR BUILDING SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS”.

Insignia is an inter-collegiate fest to bring out the talents and knowledge of the students from different colleges across Chennai. Insignia’23 is conducted on 26th and 27th of September 2023 followed by the conference.

 

Placement

We understand that education is not just about acquiring knowledge within the confines of classrooms; it’s about empowering our students to embark on a journey towards fulfilling careers and meaningful contributions to society. At the Department of  Commerce (SFS) where academic excellence meets real-world success . We take pride in our commitment to providing exceptional placement training & opportunities for our students. Our robust placement program is designed to bridge the gap between academia and industry, ensuring that our graduates are well-prepared to embark on successful careers in their chosen fields.

The importance of placements in a student’s academic journey cannot be overstated. It serves as a culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and skill development, transforming theoretical understanding into tangible career opportunities. Beyond securing employment, placements offer invaluable experiential learning, allowing students to apply their classroom knowledge in real-world settings, navigate professional challenges, and refine their skills under the mentorship of industry experts.

 

Aptitude Skill Development Program

The document on hand is a narration of the details of the events and proceedings of the workshop on Pre-Placement Training “Aptitude Skill Development Training Program” that was conducted by Vilite Training for the final year students of Madras Christian College on 18th & 19th July 2023 organised by the Department of Commerce [SFS] under the guidance of Dr. N.Sorna Kumari, Department Placement Staff Advisor .The training was conducted in the Commerce Block.

Specific Objective of the Training:

  • The main objective of the training program is to expose students to the Corporate Culture and explain them the processes followed there and to make them comfortable when they are exposed to it.
  • To make them realise the importance of a Resume and build one.

To help them understand the nuances of Group Discussions and apply them during mock discussions.

Barclays skill development training program :

The 3 days Placement Training Program was organised by the Department of Commerce (SFS) to all the final year students from 4th July 2023 to 6th July 2023. The session was conducted by GTT FOUNDATION BARCLAYS. The trainers enlightened the students on how to effectively communicate, through PowerPoint presentation, activities, and team work. And also made students to participate in various activities like group discussion, interview, team games, debate etc. They also gave opportunity to students to speak in front of the class which gave the students confidence in themselves. They also taught how to present ourselves and how to behave in an interview and in the working place. They conducted one to one interview with students which helped everyone to get the experience of interview and after that the trainers told the common mistakes that are done by the students in interview and how to answer to some questions that are asked in interview.

Sports

The Commerce Department (SFS) hosted the much awaited Intra Sports day on 15th, 16th and 19th of February 2024 in the Pavilion. The morning was filled with great zeal, excitement and frolicsome atmosphere. The 1st day started off with intra department cricket match followed by Badminton singles & doubles and concluded with Throw-ball match. Day 2 focused on Cricket, Football matches and Men & Women Athletics heats. On the final day Volley ball match was conducted after all the other sports events were wrapped up. The intra department sports event was smoothly completed with the Volleyball finals. This event continuously laid the emphasis of sports in a studentís life and physical and mental development. It was a day filled with sportsmanship, enthusiasm and memories to cherish. This year 2023 – 2024  the shield was backed up by II Bcom P.A.
