SDG 1 - NO POVERTY
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), established by the United Nations, represent a comprehensive framework of 17 interconnected goals for addressing pressing global challenges and advancing human development in a sustainable manner. Encompassing critical areas such as poverty eradication, quality education, gender equality, and peace and justice, the goals serve as a roadmap for collective action, mobilizing governments, businesses, civil society, and individuals worldwide to work together towards achieving a more prosperous and equitable world by 2030. The initiative spearheaded by the Deanery, Research and Development, Madras Christian College entails the publication of 17 books, with each dedicated to a specific SDG theme. As the SDG goals are inherently interconnected, this initiative aims to cultivate an interdisciplinary research culture at MCC that transcends disciplinary boundaries, recognizing the inherent synergy between various academic disciplines. By encouraging collaboration among faculties, research scholars, and students from diverse departments as authors and editors, this inclusive approach not only enhances the substance of the books but also embodies the ethos of interdisciplinary cooperation essential for effectively addressing complex global challenges. The Deanery envisions this initiative as a catalyst for fostering an interdisciplinary research culture within the institution, promoting cross-disciplinary collaboration and acknowledging the inherent connections between different academic fields.
The first book, titled "Poverty Alleviation from a Multisectoral Perspective," addresses SDG 1 - No Poverty. No Poverty stands as a Sustainable Development Goal, emphasizing the urgent need to eradicate poverty in all its forms and dimensions globally. It recognizes poverty as a multidimensional issue encompassing not only income deprivation but also lack of access to basic resources, services, and opportunities essential for human well-being. Achieving this goal entails addressing the root causes of poverty, including social exclusion, inequality, and lack of access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. By targeting poverty eradication, societies can promote sustainable development, social cohesion, and inclusive growth. This goal underscores the importance of implementing effective social protection systems, promoting equal access to resources and opportunities, and fostering economic empowerment for vulnerable and marginalized populations. Dr Stalin S, the editor of this publication, brings his expertise to delve into the complexities of poverty eradication, highlighting the need for collaborative efforts across sectors to address this pressing global challenge comprehensively under SDG 1.
Poverty is one of the main factors that prevents a society from progressing. Poverty has always been present in society in some way, since we learned to live as a community. However, from monarchy to democracy, various platforms have been working to eliminate poverty from time to time. Even though science and technology have developed, poverty alleviation remains a challenge for the governments of all countries. What are the ways poverty alleviation can be done? How can the existing programs and policies be intensified? Which platforms can be used for it? This book contains research papers from various fields to answer the above questions.
