Jonathan Callaghan, a British student at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, was engaged in raising funds for the support of Rural Development Projects of Madras Christian College, when he died in an accident in 1976. His death spurred his friends to enhance the scope of the project into a Memorial in his name.
The Jonathan Callaghan Memorial Centre for Integrated Rural Development Studies seeks through its programmes to initiate, accelerate and sustain the process of development in selected areas in the rural neighborhood with the active involvement of those communities. Assistance in areas such as public health, agriculture, rural industries, appropriate technology and animal husbandry are given. The Family Life Institute at Mappedu is the service project of the centre.
