Relief Programme for Migrant Labourers in Response to Covid19 Pandemic in Tamil Nadu
03rd & 04th June 2020
Social relevance is one of the strong ethos of Madras Christian College, and for several decades has responded to various social crises and disaster-related needs. As an educational institution, we believe it is our commitment and responsibility to support the vulnerable and marginalized migrant communities, who have lost their livelihood and daily wage work due to the unexpected lockdown from 22nd March 2020. As part of our response, the College in coordination with the Department of Social Work, NSS, SCM & College Union Society, plans to undertake ‘Relief Programme in Response to Covid19 Pandemic among the Migrants in Tamil Nadu’ who are struggling to go back to their native places.
• To provide basic food items to address the most urgent needs and prevent starvation and malnutrition of the migrant labourers’ who are struggling to go back to their native homes from Chennai.
It is planned to help around 3200 migrant labourers who are struggling to return to their native homes, by providing basic food items at Chennai Central Station. Each food kit will consist of bread, biscuits, dry nuts, fruit/cucumber and water in a bag.
The above work will be carried out on 3rd & 4th June 2020. The packing of the items will be done in campus and later volunteers will take it to be delivered to the migrant people leaving in the late night train from Chennai Central Station on both the days. The outreach work will be inaugurated by our Principal & Secretary Dr. P. Wilson on 3rd June 2020, and we require Volunteers from campus who wish to identify with the cause to be a part of the inauguration scheduled to be held on 3rd June 2020 at St. Thomas’s Hall by 10 am.
