A: HUMANITIES 1. Department of English: One among the oldest departments in the country, the Department of English offers a wide range of specializations under the credit based system. The syllabus under the credit system has integrated the conventional approach of exposing the student to period/ genre based texts, literature of contemporary relevance and career based papers. The special papers offered at the UG and PG levels are Women's writing, Literary Theory and Criticism, Myth and Literature, Indian Theatre, Shakespearean Criticism, European Classics in Translation, ELT and Eco-Literature. Courses Available: B.A. (English Literature), M.A., M.Phil. & Ph.D.
2. Department of Tamil: The Department of Tamil was established in 1968. It was originally part of the vernacular departments since 1871. It has the pride of having had such great Tamil stalwarts as Parithimar Kalaignar, Maraimalai Adigal, S.D.Sarguar and P.Alala Sundaram on its faculty. The Department offers in the syllabus many job oriented and currently relevant subjects such as Journalism and Mass Communication and Dramatics at the UG level and Computer in Tamil research and Linguistics, Folkloristics and Modern Christian Literature at the PG level. Courses Available: B.A. (Tamil), M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D.
3. Department of History: The Department of History was established in 1887. At the B.A. level a vocational course in B.A. History is offered with specialization in Archeology and Museology in addition to regular B.A., M.A., M.Phil and Ph.D. programmes. The Department has Laboratory facilities for chemical conservation. Courses Available: B.A. (History), M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. B.A. (History - Vocational)
4. Department of Political Science: The Department of Political Science as an independent Department was started in 1985. However, Political Science as an academic discipline has been taught since 1963. The courses in B.A. and M.A. are highly useful for taking up in Civil Service Examinations. 5. Department of Public Administration: The Department of Public Administration as an independent Department was started in 1985, though Public Administration as a Master's level course has been offered since 1964. The syllabus includes a wide variety of Management papers and the content of Public Administration Course fully satisfies the syllabus for Civil Service Examinations. Courses Available: M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D.
6. Department of Economics: The Department of Economics is one of the oldest Departments in the college. It was a part of a composite department from 1900 till 1950 and later it became an independent department. India's prominent Finance ministers and leading economists had been its Alumni. The Department has the distinction of having developed a unique and challenging curriculum and syllabus at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Students are trained to analyze concrete problems with the help of conceptual frames, theoretical insights and mathematical, statistical and econometric tools along with computer applications. Areas of specialization include Development Economics, Environmental Economics, Econometrics, Mathematical Economics, Money and Finance, Institutional Economics, Micro & Macro studies. 7. Department of Philosophy: The Department of Philosophy was established in 1865 as the Department of Moral & Mental Science. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan belonged to this Department which has rich history. The courses offered in the Philosophy Department are geared to meet the requirements to mould a student into a well balanced person. Courses Available: B.A. (Philosophy), M.A., M.Phil., Ph.D.
8. Department of Commerce: The Department of Commerce was established in 1969 and offers a comprehensive, contemporary and multi disciplinary curriculum structured to equip the students with the knowledge, skills and tools needed to make them competitive in a globalized economic environment. The Department also offers B.Com (Vocational) course focusing on Marketing, Advertising and Salesmanship. Students will be exposed to "on the job" training session for hands on experience in addition to project work. Courses Available: B.Com., M.Com., M.Phil. and Ph.D. B.Com (Vocational)
9. Department of Social Work: The Department of Social Work was established in 1989 with the twin objective of commitment to social relevance and the need to relate academic training to development. The department offers specialization in community Development and Medical and Psychiatric Social Work. The Department offers new courses such as Human Rights, Gender Studies and Communication for Development, Project Management and Counselling. Courses Available: Master of Social Work.
B: SCIENCES 10. Department of Mathematics: The Department of Mathematics was established in 1871 and has the reputation of having distinguished mathematics in the past. Areas of specialization include Computer Mathematics, Complex Analysis, Fluid Dynamics, Astronomy, Harmonic Analysis and Mathematics Education for the visually challenged. The Department offers Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes with an appropriate blend of pure and applied Mathematics courses and job oriented courses. Courses Available: B.Sc. (Mathematics), M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D.
11. Department of Statistics: The Undergraduate course in Statistics was started in 1962 and in 1969 the Department was established and an M.Sc. Course was started in the same year. The department offers courses with a comprehensive combination of Statistics, Computer application, Managerial Economics and Operations Research. The Department is known for its annual Public opinion Surveys. Courses Available: B.Sc. (Statistics), M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D.
12. Department of Physics: The Department of Physics was established in 1937, M.Sc. (Physics) was introduced in 1958, Ph.D. in 1977 and M.Phil. in 1980. The Undergraduate and postgraduate courses are planned to suit the current trends in academic and employment opportunities. The Department has a well stocked library and a well equipped library. Courses Available: B.Sc. (Physics), M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D.
13. Department of Chemistry: The Department of Chemistry is well established offering Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Research Degrees for more then live decades. The courses offered being general, students can acquire good knowledge of organic, inorganic, physical, analytical and industrial chemistry. The Department has well equipped, separate laboratories for Undergraduate and Postgraduate students aided by individual attention makes the laboratory training enjoyable and rewarding for every student. At the Postgraduate level each student is required to execute a project in collaboration with an industry or a national laboratory. Recently accorded FIST - approved status. Courses Available: B.Sc. 14. Department of Plant Biology & Plant Biotechnology: The Department of Botany was established in 1940. The Undergraduate course combines traditional Botany and the present day modern disciplines such as Bio-technology, Plant Tissue Culture and Bio-informatics. The lush Tropical Dry Evergreen forest of the campus is a live laboratory for the learners. The Department has many facilities including a modern Green House, Arboretum and a Tissue Culture Laboratory. The Undergraduate Programme also incorporates visits to Biotech industries and institutions. Courses Available: B.Sc. & M.Sc. (Plant Biology & Plant Biotechnology), M.Phil. and Ph.D.
15. Department of Zoology: The Department of Zoology was established in 1885 and is one of the oldest centers of higher education in Southern India. Areas of specialization include Animal Behaviour, Aquaculture, Endocrinology, Entomology and Fisheries Science. Innovative subjects such as Bio-technology, Molecular Biology, Immunology and Biochemistry are offered both at Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. 16. Department of Computer Science: The Department of Computer Science was established in 1993 and has a state of the art computer centre using cutting edge software technology. It provides Internet connectivity to students through Broadband. The syllabus while emphasizing the fundamental principles of computer science, is updated regularly according to the needs of the industry in order to enhance the immediate employability of the students. 17. Department of Languages: Department of Languages offers French, German, Sanskrit, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada languages under Foundation course of the Undergraduate programme.
