| The department of economics has distinguished itself to be one of the leading centre of learning economics in the country. As a post graduate and research department with enviable legacy of illustrious teachers and alumni for more than a century it has carved a niche for itself as a centre of learning in which economics is taught with a difference. It has the distinction of having initiated an active discussion on the new approach to economics curriculum and the subject of ‘teaching economics’ in an ongoing exercise among the faculty of economics. It is a matter of great satisfaction that students and faculty act in unison to make teaching-learning process a highly purposeful mission. | The department of Economics has been widely recognized as centre of learning economics that enables students to develop right perspectives about economic phenomenon. Started in the mid nineteenth century, the department has now grown into a Post Graduate and research department, having ten faculty members and about three hundred students including research students. The department through it impressive academic legacy has carved a niche for itself on account of its distinguished faculty, innovative curriculum and above all students with a high degree of motivation and interest to study economics. The department has the distinction of many notable economists who have served on the faculty; Dr. Malcolm Adiseshiah, Dr .Raja Chelliah, Dr.K N Raj, Dr.C.T Kurien, Dr.Healey, Dr.Pulapra Balakrishnan to name a few. Our alumni have also distinguished themselves in fields of Economics, government service, corporate sector and public affairs. Therefore the ambiance in the Department of Economics is suited to learning economics supported by literary and co-curricular programmes.
